Zero :: The Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Kablammo! The above is the yolk-crushingly awesome album cover from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' upcoming album It's Blitz, due out April 17th. The LP has leaked onto "teh interwebs" already, and the first single Zero is starting to get some play now.

Some Seedy Seers have mentioned "risky" posts in the past. I feel like this is one too, for the following reasons:
  • You've probably already heard of The Yeah Yeah Yeahs
  • You might have already heard "Zero" on the radio this week (or at a minimum wouldn't need me to point it out to you -- you'll hear it eventually)
  • It's not very "Yeah Yeah Yeahsy"

The first two concerns fly in the face of my personal "introduce 'em to fringe talent they'd never hear in a million years" mantra. And the third issue is a taste thing.

But my gamble, here, is that combined I'm in the clear. That is to say, because Zero is an electro-pop departure from the usual YYYs clang and swagger, I'm hoping to argue that you've never heard this band before. In fact, it might be better if you dissociate most of the music on their upcoming LP, "It's Blitz" with the previous incarnation of the YYYs all together.

Whatever helps me sleep at night.

Anyway, this track, Zero, is quite compelling and certainly grows on you. It starts softly but with a quick buzz, and builds and builds until the halfway point where best little euphoric synth line since The Hand That Feeds (or possibly Dita Dimone) takes over. At this point your fists should be clenched like on the album cover, pumping punches with alternating arms in some sort of hybrid dance-boxing manoeuvre (ask Karen to demonstrate).
