Holla if you miss the CDC!

I am probably late to the party, just discovering Lana Del Rey's Video Games.

This is because I used to have an awesome forum to hear new music... now I am just chillin' at the house remembering the good old days. Game Day George has the right idea... thanks man. And thanks Scott, it is time my friend to re-initiate.

If Only...

If I was a member of a music sharing blog, I think I'd probably post this track.

Oh well.

Geographer's "Original Sin"

I need to catch up with what's going on here...who left?

Sorry to be MIA, but I know you'll appreciate my return with this song and band. I just discovered this San Francisco-based electro/pop/rock trio, Geographer, and once I started listening I couldn't decide which song to post - they're all so good!

So I settled on "Original Sin"...manages to be wistful and make you want to dance at the same time...

The Last Post - For Reals

:)

Sniff, Sniff... Last Post

There's a lot of pressure picking a band for my last post, so I'm going to choose to ignore it.
I recently heard Baby Monster's "She Comes Alive" on Sirius and wanted to share it. BTW, you should try doing a Google image search for "Baby Monster" - you end up with some really scary sh#t and some cuties, like the following....

It's not you, it's me

Ah it's my worst fear...to come back only to find that you're leaving?! I admit, I've been neglectful, but not because I didn't love you! Please don't go!!

Ok, this is what I was going to post anyhow, not because of the Supernova (which, honestly, I just found now at 5am on a Thursday), but because I was lying on the couch the other day, contemplating the craziness of the last few months of figuring out what to do with my life, and this song literally came to me.

I heard it through the wall - my neighbour was playing music really loud, singing away, and it sounded good, so I SoundHounded it and got, Ambergris by Snowblink.

Snowblink is not only based in San Francisco, but also Canadian. How much more perfect can you get? ;) And, well, Ambergris is something precious used in perfume, specifically regurgitated whale bile that has floated in the sea, oxidizing for years....who knew?

For the record, if anyone is up for posting here in an unorganized, random way, I'd be in. Will the site still be up?

PS: Looks like this album just came out last month. The gal's name is Daniela Gesundheit. And just try to make sense of the lyrics.

Second Chance :: Peter, Bjorn, and John

Supernova Post #5: Second Chance by Peter Bjorn and John

Okay, so they're pop now. But whatevs. It's not like I'm posting U2.
 Just the Swedish cerebral-rock version of U2.

I give it two thumbs up.

Gay Human Bones :: Harlem

Supernova Post #4: Gay Human Bones by Harlem

All you need to know about this lo-fi rocker is the chorus:

"My basketball team's name is Gay Human Bones. We win most of the games that we play at home."

Can't make out much more than that. Neither can anyone else.

You Know What I Mean :: Cults

Supernova Post #3: You Know What I Mean by Cults

Masters of the quiet-loud, Cults' new track You Know What I Mean, is appropriately a forward-looking throwback. Make sense?

I thought not.

Pantha Du Prince's Stick To My Side

Love him. It started with the name. Then the face. But at the end...it's the music and the hair.

The Shoes:::Wastin' Time

a tad melancholic for those moments. The rest of the album has shades of said sentiment but then again maybe it's just me.

Enjoy the sadness. Here it is.

Can a man live on chicken breast alone?

A friend of mine lived on boiled chicken breast the majority of his adult life. Ummm...which is my analogy for posting again on Yelle. It's actually somewhat appropriate since I started my first ever music blog things with them.

Here is their Safari Disco Club.

Boo hoo hoo. R.I.P. CDC

Will Do :: TV on the Radio

Supernova post #2: Will Do by TV On the Radio

The venerable TVOTR have led off their upcoming LP, Nine Types of Light with the single "Will Do", which seems to pick up right where 2088's Dear Science (and DLZ in particular) left off.

Also, the album cover is hella coolio...

Dystopia :: Yacht

Supernova post #1: Dystopia by Yacht.

This song kicks ass as does the entire DFA label. Their new album Shangri-La is do out next month. Me wantee.

Relevant line to the CDC: "Let the motherfucker burn."

CDC Supernova (or Farewell to the CDC)

It's been obvious for a couple months that our little club has lost its lustre. And that's okay. The concept was designed to fail... who bases a club on an outdated medium anyway?

So - I'm treating the next week as a wake for our friend. I intend on posting my brains out and encourage you to join me. I'll been printing up the last couple of months of disc and distributing along with March 2011 - the last CDC disc. Ever.

The March disc represents the bookend to three full years of the CDC. A good place to stop, methinks. Thanks to everyone who has made it a fun place to discover some new music. For those who are actually saddened by all of this... I've been thinking about a different way to do something similar, but it will require some development and a little time. So stay tuned. But for the CDC as we know it, I think it's time to say...

So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, adieu...

Winter might be over, but it was a "Bon Iver"

I haven't posted in awhile. Been distracted. But this song jolted me back. It's holding on, doesn't want to let go, so here I am sharing it with you all. It's an oldie (in the sense that it wasn't just released), but I'm into breaking the rules every once in awhile. And the video that it's set to here is pretty gorgeous. Hope you like it.

P.S. I'm off to New Orleans for Mardi Gras today, will definitely have some music to share when I get back....laissez les bonnes temps roulez!

Tyler The Creator - Yonkers

I don't think I've seen this on the CDC yet - but it probably belongs here, somewhere.  Warning - if language offends, tune out now... adult themes... etc.

Stare into the Sun :: Graffiti6

Graffiti6's Stare into the sun is totally stuck in my head, and I thought I'd do my best to get it stuck in your collective heads too :)

Graffiti6 is a London duo of writer/producer/DJ Tommy and singer Jamie. Tommy's produced a number of recent artists (Kanye, Kylie Minogue), but I love the fact that he produced Right Said Fred's "I'm too Sexy." That alone makes this song worth a listen.

The Suzan's Home

This is their opening track from their Golden Week For The Poco Poco Beat album.
This Japanese foursome has some serious musical chop and great vocal. Some may fault this band as too all over the place: are they punk, are they alt, are they 60's psychedelic? But I think they are just showing off in a good way. Kinda like saying..."we do these because we can...and it's fun...but also serious".

Children of the Revolution :: Neon Indian

So. I wasn't a huge fan of Neon Indian's po-mo LP, 2009's Psychic Chasms (exception: Should Have Taken Acid with You), but their recent cover of T-Rex's Children of the Revolution has been permanently fixed inside my brain-parts.

The synth lead is (IMHO) the best original timbre since the Chemical Brother's Setting Sun snarl or the bass line from Nine Inch Nails Closer.  I'm starting to believe that Mexican-born Alan Palomo is out for garnering more than just indie hipster cred (which he has also done).

MoneyGrabber :: Fitz & the Tantrums

So,

Blah blah song Moneygrabber, blah blah by Fitz & the Tantrums.

Done.

Undertow :: Warpaint

So, like many, I've been a bit derelict in my CDC duties. To be honest - I've "discovered" a lot of music lately. But it's all been middling.

And you people only deserve the best!

But fear not. I think the music tide is turning. Here's the first of a post wave. Undertow by Warpaint, may not be the best track on their debut album "The Fool", (I almost posted the eponymous Warpaint) but I think that's only because there is no best track.

The album is definitely a "more than the sum of it's parts" proposition - dark, brooding, and conjuring up sophisticated drum and bass lines reminiscent of A Perfect Circle.

'Cept these are all ladies. Dark, brooding, ladies.

"Angel Echoes," by Four Tet

I've been a little MIA from the blog world, which includes the CDC, and I extend my sincerest apologies...but I think my contribution today will totally redeem me. I just discovered this artist and song yesterday. The guy behind Four Tet is a Brit/South African by the name of Kieran Hebden. Never heard of him before, but he has certainly gotten my attention with this song. Enjoy, and happy 2011!

Angel Echoes

P.S. Jorge Drexler was one of my first contributions to the CDC, and he is coming to SF! He performs this Wednesday at the Mezzanine, and I'll be going, if you are interested in joining buy your tickets fast because I think they'll sell out, and let me know so we can meet up!

MEGAPOST!

So here are three catchy tunes, that I've been digging. You've probably heard at least one of them, Foster the People's Pumped Up Kicks has been all over the radio, but their EP just came out on Tuesday. I dare you to NOT sing it over and over again in your head. Also, these guys will be at Coachella this year.

Number two is Cameras by CDC Alumni Matt & Kim, from their latest album, Sidewalks. Again, super-catchy.

Number three is Hahahaha jk? by Das Racist. Stereogum says these guys make Brooklyn on Bollywood on Buzzfeed informed post-everything rap plays.

i HATE Crystal Castles

Now please enjoy this Crystal Castles song that i DON'T hate.
Not in Love (featuring Robert Smith) is from their second eponymous album, released last year.

Get It Girl ~ Hot Pink Delorean

A pandora find. I was building Hannes and Hemnes from Ikea (which takes a while, more when you're tipsydrunk), drinking a delicious Racer 5 IPA (which the lovely Sugarscoot provided), and this song came on.

Hot Pink Delorean hails from Beantown, MA. The title of the album is "I am what porno should be". Comedy.

It made me realize that I haven't been clubbing since... well, it's been a long time. The instrumental part drags on a bit, but I dig the first few minutes.

Gitcho dance-party on.

Enjoi.

Spoek Mathambo:Let Them Talk

Great album this Mshini Wam by Spoek Mathambo, the self hailed prince of township tech. The tracks are all different and quite hookey. Let Them Talk is my my pick for out CDC partly because of Zaki Ibrahim, the guest voice for this track, and partly because I like the smoove down tempo vibe.

Hanni El Khatib: You Rascal You

And I quote:"Hanni El Khatib grew up in San Franscisco, California. The son of Palestinian and Filipino immigrants and the first American in his family, he became obsessed with classic Americana and pop culture of the 1950s and 60s. Influenced by pioneers of early rock and r&b (Johnny Burnette, Sam Cooke, Johnny Cash), El Khatib created a musical aesthetic to match his vision. The multi-instrumentalist serves as singer, songwriter & producer for his one-man band (live he is joined by a drummer) that is part blues, part garage rock, part soul, part folk & part doo whop.

As the creative director for HUF and lifelong skater, El Khatib professes to a love for well-crafted objects: classsic cars, cans pomade and stiletto switchblades." (taken from http://innovativeleisure.net/?page_id=45)

Here is his You Rascal You song.

Caligula by MNDR

Caligula is a song by MNDR. It remains to be seen whether it is at all related to the Roman Emperor since to me this song is all about the groove. There is a local connection: 1/2 of the duo hails from Oakland. Happy New Year all.

Decemberists ~ Down By The Water

Because it's December.

J'ai Claque La Porte

I don't know what this song is about but I likes it. I heard this song visiting a friend in the middle of Paris. I had just ordered a strong coffee from Maison Collet on the Rue Montorgueil. My coffee was particularly hot and burned my tongue (and my memory). I now present to you Chromeo's J'ai Claque La Porte

Buy Nothing Day :: The Go! Team

December, you are half-over, and everyone is busy with the holidays, but we haven't forgotten about you.

Here, play with The Go! Team's "Buy Nothing Day".

See, that's better.

hello yellow

WHALE by Yellow Ostrich!

Who are these guys??!! Actually it's mostly just one guy, Alex Schaaf, recording "lo-fi folk-infused indie pop" in doormrooms and empty movie theatres. His new album is available as a pay-what-you-want download.

I dare you to sit still.

:: We Are Enfant terrible

So it's been awhile since I've felt like I've made a "real discovery". But We Are Enfant Terrible feel like exactly that. Plus they boost my French artist count for the month of November to two.

The two-boys-and-a-girl trio from Paris materialized from the ether in May 2008, and are self-described as "electro-dance sound with indie-rock and synthpop sounds... and a touch of 8bit music". Indeed, when they perform live,  all parts are reproduced using guitars, drums... and a re-programmed Nintendo Gameboy. Seriously.

I couldn't decide between these two tracks:

Flesh 'n Blood Kids and
Eagles Don't Sparkle.

If anyone has strong feelings let me know. Otherwise is will be a mix-time decision.

The Smoke :: Home Video

When I first found out that Home Video was about to release their 3rd LP, I was hesitant that they'd be able to keep their very-specific style and grow at the same time. I was right to be concerned. But that doesn't mean a little more of the same smooth synth arpeggios is a bad thing. Check out The Smoke.

Bonus points for the brilliant cover. Do you see it?

Home Tonight by Witness

This album makes me laugh. But it also makes me wonder at the gift of gab. Witness (John Parr) is an awesome story teller and musician. He does it the way I like it.

Here is Home Tonight off his The Everafter LP.

Dada ~ Dizz Knee Land

Yeah, I know it's old.

So is your mom.

Disneyland 2010 is happening next week. We will break Zane's record of 6 consecutive rides on Small World. Oh yes, we will.

edit: holy shit! It appears that Dada is still extant.

Get Some :: Lykke Li

"Like the shotgun needs an outcome, I'm your prostitute, you gon' get some."

Just some of the lyrics from Lykke Li's latest single Get Some, from her upcoming album, Wounded Rhymes, to be released on March 1st.

Try not to get this song stuck in your head.

Thursday, November 18, 2010

Vertigo :: Anya Marina

Anya Marina's new album is coming out next year, and she just released a 5-song EP of "misfit songs" that don't belong on the album. While I liked a number of these tracks, Vertigo, a song off of her 2008 album was the first song of hers that I heard, and I think it's still my favorite.

Gunfight Epiphany :: Robert Duncan

Yeah fine. It's a TV show theme song.

But if you can listen to Gunfight Epiphany and not whistle it afterward, you're probably dead inside.

Like zombie dead. Like the show the Walking Dead. For which this is not the theme song. You see what I didn't do there?

This is the theme song to Terriers on FX.

...

In my defense, both shows are good.

Saturday, November 13, 2010

La Musique :: Yelle

I'm not sure how it happened, but Yelle's new single, La Musique,
and accompanying remix disc sneaked (I wanna say "snuck" so bad) under my radar.

But I've boiled down my review to an SAT-style analogy:

Yelle is to "Epic" as La Musique is to "Fucking Epic".

For a bonus helping of awesome, please check out the video, consisting entirely of pop-culture-inspired animated gifs....

Marnie Stern's Risky Biz

I love Marnie Stern's latest album. I had to train my ears/brain a bit to her sonic stylings but having passed that, i adore this rocking album. Air guitar enthusiasts beware; you may break a finger or two if you take this on. For our CDC, I present to you Risky Biz.

Thursday, October 28, 2010

Starf*cker :: Julius

Heard the song Julius on the radio - don't know anything about the band, except that doing an image search for "Starfucker" on Google generated some interesting hits, most of them actually involving the band. Oh, apparently they're from Portland, and they like to wear women's clothes while performing.

Jamie, My Intentions are Bass :: !!!

!!!, aka "chk-chk-chk", aka any three identical sounds uttered in a row, are not new to the party rock scene. Frontman Nic Offer says the band's name was inspired by the subtitles of the movie The Gods Must Be Crazy, in which the clicking sounds of the Bushmens' Khoisan language were represented as "!".

Please discover this local (Sacramento) band's base intentions with Jamie, My Intentions are Bass, from their latest - 2010's Strange Weather, Isn't It?

If your looking for your pants, they just got danced-off.

Nine Inch Nails - Rockabye Baby! - Hurt

And the track...

I likes!

These are all recent love at first listens. I didn't know much about what they do nor how they do it so it was a treat to have chanced on them. There are a number of good songs from their albums so please investigate. By the way, Alex Winston's EP is virtually free; in exchange for your e-mail you get the whole EP. What a deal.
