You Stood Me Up :: Benji Hughes

Not one to settle for "so-bad-it's-good", Benji Hughes is pioneering the "so-good-it's-bad-it's-good" sound. Seriously. I think there must only be music where normally his brains would be. And this stuff just leaks out.

I mean, just look at his album cover. While attaining indie hipster credibility usually only requires overcoming one's own ironically bad t-shirt -- Mr. Hughes is required to overcome himself. He is the ironically bad t-shirt. And I believe he is to the faux-hipster what Goths are to Vamps.

But how talented is this Flaming-Lips-inspired auteur? His debut CD, A Love Extreme, is a freaking double-CD. (Why wait four or five albums in before trying your hand at such ambition?) Of course, that could simply mean 25 tracks of crap. But it's not. By god, it's not.

Picking between 25 tracks is not easy. I've gone with "You Stood Me Up". And when you start to sing along with it, know that you are not alone.

(Note: imeem does not have the full track, so I have embedded the new Yahoo! Media Player - this means that any mp3 on the web can be embedded simply as a hyperlink in our blog posts now, ex: Nantes, and all songs on the page will appear in the player's playlist)

Here are a couple more tracks from A Love Extreme:
