Year in Review (as reviewed by precisely one person)

The douchey thing to do this time of year is to compile a Best-Of list. I therefore promptly present:
1) My fave CDC songs from 2009 (goal was top 25 - ended up with 35)
2) My fave tracks from 2009 - CDC or otherwise (goal was top 10, ended up with 15)

Scott's Fave Songs of '09

Scott's Fave CDC Tracks from '09

I realize you probably don't care about this. Oh well.

Empire of the Sun (the band, not the movie)

Empire of the Sun
is Australia's answer to MGMT, a duo making fantasy pop. The first single off their debut album is the title track, "Walking on a Dream." The pair managed to secure the number 4 slot on the BBC's Sound of 2009 list.

Their album art kicks some serious 1980's ass.

In December... Drinking Horchata!

I'm gonna just barely get this post in on time. We've been singing along to Vampire Weekend's new song "Horchata," from their forthcoming album (due out on January 12). The lyric includes the word "December", so it seems imperative that it be posted this month. Enjoy!
(Also - I'd look psychotic in a balaclava)

Cymballs Eat Guitars:::Indiana

It was hard to choose which one of their songs to post. But alas, what is available on Lala (my new best friend)--and thus what is easy, decided it for me. This songs goes up, down, fast, slow, build ups, crescendos...you get my drift? But my favorite part are the afterthought seeming last 2-3 notes.

Solid Gold :: The Golden Filter

Sometimes I write a bunch of stuff. But all you need to know this time around is that this song is Solid Gold. Just kidding. I am going to write something informational, see:

The Golden Filter are based in NYC, but the lead singer, Penelope Trappes, grew up near Byron Bay, NSW, Down Under. She seems hot, but I can't find any photos without her hair in her face.

The song is certainly hot. So don't drop it.

MySpace Eats imeem (or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Lala (or Take It In :: Hot Chip))

Change. Change we can believe in. Right?

So MySpace bought imeem. And promptly shut it down. Like, the same day. There are vague claims that they will rebuild imeem Playlists "as best they can". But it all seems far from certain. And in the meantime us Seedies get bupkis.

And so we shall embrace the change. Goodbye imeem. Hello Lala.

What's Lala? Well - it's kind of like having iTunes on the web. Your personal music collection. Everywhere.

It's also the new home for CDC playlists. Eventually, I'll build out all of the old playlists, but I already have the last few on Lala. From here on out, here's what you need to do to add a song:
  1. Click on the link below the playlist or on the playlist title. If you are prompted to log in, use the standard CDC credentials in the Help tab: thecompactdiscclub@gmail.com / thecdc0408
  2. Hover over My Collection > Recent Playlists > The CDC - December '09 (or whatever month)
  3. Click on Pick Songs on the right above the playlist to find and add your song. You might have to pay 10 cents to add it, but that's fine - it'll come out of a CDC account and then we'll have it for the disc.
If you can't find a song, you'll have to send it to me as the library is sync'd to my collection.

A benefit of the move is - once logged in - you can play EVERY SINGLE CDC SONG FULL LENGTH in a high resolution. I suspect there are other benefits, but I'm still learning the ropes. Let me know if you see anything cool. AND PLEASE EMAIL ME IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS AT ALL.

Without further adieu, the first post under this new regime is a song that has me more excited than possibly any other song I've posted this year. It's a new Hot Chip track called "Take It In", from their upcoming January 2010 LP "One Life Stand". It's a little but Hot Chip, a little bit goth, and a lotta bit Depeche Mode. It feels important to me. Lemme know what you think.

Now - you may be saying to yourself, "Self, I thought we weren't suppose to post song by bands that have been posted before". True. I might have suggested that as an unwritten rule in the past. But screw it. If there's a new song by a CDC alumnus go ahead and post it. Key being the newness. The mandate has been to share bands that others might not know about, and I'm suggesting we simply expand that to songs themselves. So, in summary, if you are about to post ask yourself these two questions:
  1. Is it likely that most Seedies have not heard of this band?
  2. Is it likely that most Seedies have not heard this song? (because, say, it's brand new)
If the answer to either questions is "Yes", fire away. If the answer to either question is "Uh, it's U2", maybe no. If the answer is "Yeah it's a Radiohead song, but it's from an album that doesn't come out for a month", go for it. Yeah, we've heard of Radiohead. But maybe we haven't heard about the new album yet. Huzzah! Information has been shared!

Okay. So "change". Embrace it. Hug it out.
End communication.

I've been bad...

...and mean to you, but you right my wrongs. I do try - you know I love to sing all your so-o-ooongs.

I haven't forgotten about you, CDC!

Here's a jam I've been bumpin' in the car for the past couple of months.

Enjoy,

I was eating nachos, sitting with my mother...

Q: How could any song with a first line like that suck?!

A: There is no suck. Only rock. Feel it.

Boat. Lately.

And happy December, Seeds.

Sweet Love Songs

I have noticed that the CDC harbours a couple of sweethearts, who go for the odd youthful love song, though they are few and far between. (The song posts, not the sweethearts!) But lucky for you all, I've got one! And it comes from Aussie's very own Darren Hanlon. He's got a sound that, according to Wikipedia, is "urban folk".

Ripper Mayte! you might say, and I agree!

This month's pull is from his Hello Stranger album and goes by the handle Cheat the Future.

Enjoy!

Transliterator :: DeVotchKa

You might have heard the DeVotchaKa song "How It Ends" on the Little Miss Sunshine soundtrack. Try "Transliterator" on for size - it feels like Gypsy David Byrne, and has a hint-o-holiday in there to boot - so hello December.

Having trouble uploading to imeem, so try this Lala stream:

P.S. DeVotchKa are from Denver. Not Eastern Europe.
P.P.S. Just found out that they actually opened for David Byrne this summer. Huh.
